In 2009 Quigley finished his CD at this trial with a first place, and in 2010 we earned placements in 3 out of 4 rally runs, for a total of 15 ranking points.<\/p>\n
This year I decided to only enter the Saturday show, since weekend beach traffic usually makes the return trip a nightmare. What do you know – this year traffic wasn’t an issue at all.<\/p>\n
We had a good time in rally, placing 3rd in Excellent with a score of 95, beating a 3-way tie for the placement – which is a first! Deductions were for out of position (including on the 3 steps backward, Quigley was crabbing a little) and nicking the first jump with one rear foot. Everything else was very nice. Quigley started to move into a down on the honor sit when the next team took too long for him, but I reminded him to stay put and he did. Since his elbows stayed well off the ground and he remained in his spot, there was no deduction.<\/p>\n
In Advanced we had a retry because Quigley was very much out of position on a halt – pivot right – halt so that I couldn’t do the exercise properly, he was sniffing and lagging a little throughout the course, and very slow to respond to get up again from a halt – down – sit. The grass was just too nice I guess. (Like last year, SBKC had fresh sod trucked in and rings laid out in the horse arena.) There was one other deduction that I unfortunately don’t remember, but we ended up with a score of 94.<\/p>\n
Normally at that point we would have packed up and headed home, but the Western Fox Terrier Breeders Association was offering Earthdog, and after talking to the very nice people who were staffing the entry desk, I decided to let Quigley have a try at the Intro to Quarry. I was told that dogs much taller than him can manage the tunnels, and even turn around inside.<\/p>\n
I don’t know if Quigley had already reached the end of his attention span for the day after rally and waiting in the heat for an hour for Earthdog to start, but he wasn’t very interested. He went to the tunnel entrance after a bit of encouragement, entered to just past his elbows, then backed out and and dug at the dirt a little, but that was it. Ah well, for the rare occasion of Earthdog being offered directly on the show grounds next to the obedience and rally rings, it was fun to just see what he would do.
