Quigley and I attended our first-ever obedience trial today. It was an UKC trial.<\/p>\n
The bad news first: neither of our two runs earned a qualifying score.<\/p>\n
The good news (and I’m totally excited about this) is that Quigley was a really, really good boy today! First of all he spent most of the day crated in the car, while I was stewardingfor the utility and open classes.<\/p>\n
I brought him out a couple times when I was able to take a break, but he was totally mellow, walking nicely with me across half the park to go to the restroom, not pulling me allover creation and most importantly not sniffing at all.<\/p>\n
In the ring things went about 100% better than I expected. During our first run we NQ’d because Quigley unfortunately didn’t like the idea of a male judge touching him and took a side step out of the way during the stand for exam. I also made a pretty bad handler error during our heel free, about 3\/4 of the way through Quigley must have thought I signaled him to stay, so he stopped (in a perfect stand). Unfortunately I didn’t have my wits about me to just give another heel command and instead went to the end of my heeling pattern and waited there for him to do something. He didn’t, so I called him to me and he did a perfect front and swing finish.<\/p>\n
The second run wasn’t bad either, but he didn’t have the nice slack leash all of the time, bumped me a couple times during the figure 8 and got up into a sit from the down during the honor exercise, so I had to give another command to down (which he promptly obeyed, too). The heel free was very, very nice.<\/p>\n
Both recalls over the high jump and both long sits (1 minute) were perfect.<\/p>\n
So while of course I would have liked a qualifying score (who doesn’t! ;)), I’m totally thrilled with today’s outcome and hope that tomorrow we’ll have another 2 runs that will be at least as good.<\/p>\n
I’m just so stoked that my usually pulling and sniffing dog was such a good boy, even the judges said we did a nice job for such a green team.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
